Mondello 13-5-7
Red Flag Costly
Ken Elliott recorded another top five for the ever improving JH004 but left Mondello Park frustrated as he lost more valuable points through a red flagged race. Qualifying was, as usual, an extremely tight affair with the top eight covered by a second and unfortunately for Elliott he couldn’t pull together a perfect lap and ended up 6th, not ideal around Mondello which can be quite difficult to pass around.
Nevertheless he had a chance to improve his grid position in the heat which he lined up on the front row. He snatched the lead off the line with, what is now becoming his customary fast get away and looked to have everything in hand during the early stages of the race. He controlled the pace from the front, not taking any unnecessary risks while the battle raged behind him.
Late in the race however, the pace seemed to be falling away from the Clondalkin based driver and he looked to be under more and more pressure as the laps wound down. A slight mistake saw Elliott lose the lead in the closing stages and he had to settle for second place and 6th on the grid for the final.
Again, Elliott’s fast getaway sent him up the order on the opening lap and for the opening laps he ran with the lead pack. Like the previous round in Mondello, it was all looking a bit processional and a couple of optimistic lunges among the top six saw the lead train become somewhat fragmented. A safety car sorted all this out and unfortunately Elliott had dropped back to 6th but he knew that the pace car had given him a fresh chance.
Never one to be caught napping, Elliott made the most of the restart and began picking off some of the lead group. He had elevated himself to fourth when the red flag came out with 4 laps remaining. On count back Elliott was classified 5th, and with it he lost two valuable points.
“It was a bit disappointing with the red flag but this is racing. I just don’t seem to get a break with those sorts of things. How and ever that was the last race and we now look towards the 9th of June. We should have some new improvements coming which will hopefully help get the results we need” said Elliott
The next round is back at Mondello on the 9th of June where it is imperative that Ken get his challenge back on track after his unfortunate run of results.
