Heavey presents Spire by Leastone
Leastone boss Paul Heavey shook down Leastones latest project, the Spire GT-R sportscar, at Mondello Park last weekend. Donned in Total lubricants livery, modelled on Peugeot’s successful 908 Le Mans cars, Heavey carried out a handful of laps while performing various system checks. He declared himself happy with the new cars roll out. “We did about 10-15 laps, nothing is leaking and nothing is burning so it was a success. Obviously I would have liked to put more laps on it, but we were under serious pressure to finish the build and we did well to get out at the end of the day”
The Spire is a 465kg, twin seat sportscar, powered by a 170bhp Kawasaki ZX12R engine. The car is built in the UK, with Leastone becoming an official Irish importer after taking delivery of the first car during the winter. Heavey is keen to introduce it into the track day market as the car can be registered to run on Irish roads. With prices starting at €18,000, it offers track dayers a cheap way of experiencing race car performance with the added benefit of being able to drive home.
Heavey will also look at running the car in Formula Libre races. “While I haven’t driven the car in anger yet, on paper it looks more than capable to compete in Libre. All we will do is bang a set of Dunlop slicks on and plumb in the fire extinguisher. But that’s a while down the road. For the moment though we will just run the car on track days.”
